You can try the upper vent or lower vents. Some have drilled a hole in the side so the probe can fit.

Thanks Ed. The lower vent sounds like a better idea, with less hassle taking the lid on and off. I'd be hesitant to drill a hole in the side. Wouldn't that just create a second chimney

Hi smibri: I've been on the road a while and just saw your question with no answer. I use the 732 and drilled 2 holes just under the lid on my OTS (opposite smokenator), just big enough to pass the probes thru. Works like a charm. I thot the holes would admit too much air, and made plugs with broken drill bits or other rod, but have not needed them. Close all vents, fire goes out, even with the two small holes (3/16 size). Enjoy the convenience.

RE: the wires for the temp probes.
I drilled a pair of holes in my kettle and installed a couple of brass grommets for the wires to pass through. If there's any extra air flow, it hasn't been an issue.

I always drill a hole for a 3" probe type thermometer in the hood of my Weber. Walmart sells the thermometers and they are pretty much self sealing as they are designed.

Thanks to all of you for getting back to me on the question of drilling holes, and sorry to be late with this, as I've been away as well! I appreciate the help!

Question regarding use of a Maverick ET 732 probe on the cooking grate. Do folks run the wire under the lid (which i know is not recommended in the user guide), or does it have to be inserted thru the vent in the lid, which is a complete pain in the butt? I wouldn't want to damage the wire, but I do wonder what other people's experience has been. TIA Brian I run the wires from the Maverick dual probe thermometer through the bottom vents and up to the meat and grill surface.

I thread the cable through a bottom vent hole and clip the cable onto the grate about an inch from the food. i love the way it keeps the temp at a steady 225. I have abandoned the water pan also as a poster above this noted. I use a loaf pan and only refill it every 3-4 hours. Also allows for more coal to be used at the start.
