Hello,
Just got my smokenator and I was able to use the direction settings for top and bottom dampers to get the desired 235 F at the dome during test burn using Taylor candy thermometer. I used 60 briquettes of Kingsford blue and lit 16 to start. When I open the lid, my wood chunks (only using 2, one on each side) would develop a flame and burn until I put lid back on. I put lid on (using 4 binder clips as a precaution) I had no smoke for next 15 minutes. I opened up the lid and saw the wood was all black and now looked like a piece of natural lump coal. Is this normal? Should I add wood chunks every hour when I open up the lid to check water? This is the only confusing part to me.

I've seen the coals burn like that, but not the wood. Where did you put the starter coals? When I start a smoke I push all of the coals and wood to the sides and put the starter coals under the water pan.
