Don't understand how by following directions perfectly, mine spikes to 280-320 NOW!.. Brand new Gold One Touch. Should I trust the built in temp gauge. Figured a Weber one would be decent. Also, the directions say put the vent on top opposite the SMIATOR. Mine has the vent on top instead of handle. Suggestions, anyone?

First I'd check the thermometer in boiling water, it should read 212. If it is correct, use 3-4 large binder clips around the edge of the weber as it shoulds like you might have an air leak. The last time I bought my kettle, all of the lids were warped on the ones they had. Don't put the clips on until your temps start going up above 240 or so at the dome or you might have issues getting your temps hot enough on a cold day. As for lid placement, it shouldn't matter if the vent is on top.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Ed

This is an older thread, but I'll add something. You can ask anyone who's been smoking for awhile. They will tell you that no matter what brand cooker you buy, the factory thermo is junk.
Test it as above, but also later make a glass of ice water (lots of ice) thermo should read 32~33* Have to test it both extremes to really know.
Also, I first used a cheap Home depot thermo that I installed in my lid. It would at times show 100* more than my digital thermo. If your temp is truly way too high, your water will be a furious rolling boil. If it's simmering or barely boiling, then figure your thermo is out of calibration.
