I have been using extruded coconut charcoal for grilling some time now and prefer it over charcoal briquettes.
When my Smokenator arrives, I plan on using 12-15 lit, standard Kingsford briquettes to start but use coconut charcoal for the rest of the fuel.
Have others tried this before? Should I go by volume or weight to figure out the proper amount of coconut charcoal (coconut charcoal burns twice as long vs briquettes, so I was going to use half as much to hopefully get about 6 hours of smoking time)?
If you haven't heard of or haven't tried extruded coconut charcoal and the other types of similar charcoal available, here's more info:

I don't work for the company that makes or distributes the charcoal, just a big fan. It is really impressive stuff and maybe a little environmentally friendlier than other types of charcoal as it uses coconut shells leftover from harvesting coconuts and there are no binding agents or accelerants. The charcoal pieces are all octagonal shaped with a hole in the middle, so very consistent size, shape, and weight without any small pieces falling through the grate.
When they sold the stuff out of a warehouse about an hour away from my house, I filled the back of my car with several hundred pounds of it and have been using it sparingly to make it last.
I guess I can just tinker with amounts until I find the right number--I just didn't want to waste this precious stuff as shipping and handling can be expensive. If anyone lives in the eastern SF Bay Area and wants to split the S&H handling charges on the coconut charcoal, please let me know as I will be out in about a year and I don't think I could manage to drive back a carload of it from their new warehouse in San Diego.
Thanks!
Paul
