i wondering if i were to make a ss plate or alum foil that fits on the lower grate and is cut off were the smokenator rest on the grate if that would help with getting more air across the coals. im pretty sure it would speed up the air across the coals causing them to burn quicker but im not sure how long the burn time would be decreased. im just want some imput on this idea.

I could be all wet on this, but I don't think it's a good idea. I think that if you do what you're describing, you're going to create a "tunnel" where the air comes in the bottom, through the coals, & out the top - without circulating around the food. To see what I'm talking about, google "smoker mods" or "cheap smoker mods". The cheap offset smokers, like you see at walmart, etc., suffer from this. The solution that many people have used is to extend the chimney down toward the bottom of the grill, to force the smoke back down over the food before making it's way out the chimney. Actually....here (this should explain what I'm talking about) bbqinstitute.com/SmokerModifications.pdf
