I have a Smokeanater coming and after looking closley at my OLD style weber have come to the conclution that a NEW Weber SILVER would be nice.
My question is will I have to "season" this new weber before i start smoking with it?

No, Webers do not need seasoning. They have a very hard, baked-on enamel surface that does not require and will not 'take' seasoning. Iron smokers should be seasoned, but you can just start cooking on your new Weber.

I bought a new Weber Performer this spring. The smokenator was the first 'accessory' I purchased. Started smoking right away. Just follow the instructions and you're on your way to great meat!

I started smoking last summer - I've got a cart-mounted Weber One Touch. One thing I found handy, during initial set up, was to mark the lower vent control to indicate the vent opening. While searching for an image to explain this better than my words, I found instructions on another BBQ web site: www.bluesmoke-bbq.com/002gear/weber_bottom_vent_marking.phpOne thing was not entirely clear from their instructions - keep in mind that there is a lot of free play in the control mechanism, so when marking the control position, always do so after moving the control in the same direction. In other words, open the vent wider then you need, and then close it down to the size you need. Otherwise, you will get inconsistent results. I marked mine with a Sharpie marker, which faded within a month or two. By then I had learned that (on my grill), my normal cooking (and smoking) setting for the lower vent had the control lever between the 2nd and 3rd circular vent opening, just over the edge of the 2nd. One of these days, I'll get out there with my number punch set and mark it permanently...

I recommend you consider moving up to the Weber Gold. The addition of the easily removable ash catcher is a great convenience. If you can swing the cost of a Performer with the propane charcoal starter, handle-mounted thermometer, attached work table, and charcoal storage, you will really appreciate each of these items.

I wish I had the performer grill if only for the thermometer that is mounted on the top. I have the gold but not with the cart and no thermometer. I'm thinking of drilling a hole in the dome and mounting a thermometer there but this will void my warranty on the dome I believe, but I'm starting to think it may be worth it.

I installed a cheap ($8.00) thermo from home depot on my Weber. It works very poorly. Make sure you get a good one, or even consider a digital.

i drilled a small hole into the dome of my weber silver and put in a simple thermometer from home depot (the one they sell to install in the char-b-cu or some other grill). sort of did it on the fly, even resorted to using cooking oil as a lubricant. but it worked, and i have been very happy with the temperature control. just ordered the smokenator, and i am looking forward to putting everything together & enjoying some smoking!
