I have a performer grill. Just looking for a recommendation on which side to place the smokenator? Also, does anyone use the hinged grates for easier access if they need to refill charcoal?

You will want the Smokenator opposite of the exhaust vent on the dome. As for the hinged grate you will want to use it if you have one. It makes adding more charcoal easy. My Weber didn't have the hinged grate so I purchased one at the same time I purchased my Smokenator.
