With the Smokenator does anyone know how to get a good char on a tri-tip without having to light extra coals for direct heat? Also, what about a bark on tri-tip? Has anyone ever done that or is it possible or even should it be done?

You might be able to do it by pulling the water pan out. This will allow the heat to come out of the area where the water pan was. Some people have put the water pan up on the food support grill. Putting the pan up there would still allow the kettle to be moist.
