Nice to meet everyone on this forum. I'm from Rochester and new to grilling and BBQing. In May of 2013, I wanted to start "BBQing". BBQing is in quotes because at that time I didnt really know what it meant. So, I walked into Home Depot and the salesman pointed me at the Weber kettle and I'm glad he did because I could've been persuaded to buy anything.
Cooking has always been an interest of mine and grilling on the kettle was and is enjoyable, especially since the smoke from the charcoal adds so much flavor and I was intrigued by it. Smoking was something that I've always heard about but never took the time to understand. And, since I enjoyed the smokey grill flavor, I started Googling about smoking in early 2014 which eventually led me to amazingribs.com and then here. Yes, I'm a newbie but willing to learn and enjoy this pastime/hobby because it produces some great food! For someone like me, the SN and Weber make a great combo and will be something I'll cook with for a long time.

Hello Jay,
I guess we have some more things in common besides both being newbies. When I first wanted to start "BBQing" I did not know what it meant either. I though grilling was BBQing, but I soon found out that there is quite a difference. Then I found the same site you did, amazingribs.com, and that is where I first heard of the Smokenator. It was mostly based on what I read there that I bought the Smokenator to go with my Weber kettle. Amazingribs also influenced me to buy my Maverick ET-732. Amazingribs.com is my go to site for all information about outdoor cooking. I really enjoy the way they explain how everything works. As I write this I have a boneless pork rib end roast with some potatoes, sweet potatoes, and butternut squash smoking away. My first time doing the squash, but hey, this BBQ stuff has got me trying all kinds of new things to cook.
Really nice getting to know you Jay!

It is really nice learning more about you and Allan.
Just keep on practicing when you can and it will come.

I unfortunately posted under Allan's post instead of doing my own thread. Hey Tom. Just cut and paste your post into your own thread and delete the one in my thread. If anyone deserves their own thread here, it is you.

Thanks Tom. Work has gotten busy recently so I haven't been able to do much in the bbqing realm. A couple of these places I've heard of but are a little bit out of the way from me. While I'm technically in the same county as the city of Rochester, I'm more on the border closer to the next county. I'll have to check to see if any of these places are along my commute.

I hear you. There were times I had to travel and got back on Saturdays and had to work on Saturdays. Not a lot of fun and didn't want to BBQ when I was younger. Just kept a notebook that I could refer to when I could.

Hi, Jay!!! I didn't get "serious" about BBQ until about 4 or 5 years ago. I too thought grilling and bbqing were one in the same. I bought worthless equipment that didn't perform. After lots of wasted money and bad food I started reading and studying the science of BBQ. The first time I smoked a Boston butt for pulled pork and it turned out the way it was supposed to was a great feeling. I learned you have to do your homework before smoking or grilling something new and use well-made equipment that's simple and easy to use. Good luck on your journey!!!

Thanks arniesbbq! Good luck to you too! I was lucky to have a good salesman. And, now that I received my in-laws Weber kettle I have dedicated SN and grilling kettles! Now, only if work will stop interfering with my BBQ time. I just got my wireless BBQ thermometer, not the Maverick but the Ivation version. They look identical. Hopefully, using the thermometer will make multitasking easier.
