I have a weber gas grill and a UDS that I made from a 55 gal. drum. Recently I purchased a Kettle Pizza accessory for a 22.5" Weber Kettle and plan on getting a Weber Performer grill. Just in the last few days, I became aware of the Smokenator and like the reviews that I've read and plan on buying one. Some of the reviews I've read, talk about doing away with the water pan that comes with the Smokenator and going with a larger pan that holds more water. I have never used a Weber Smokey Mountain smoker, but I know some of the reviews I've read talk about using sand instead of water in the water pan of the Smokey Mountain... Have anyone here ever thought about this or tried sand instead of water as a heat stabilizer in a pan for the Smokenator?

Welcome mojim. I do believe some have tried sand but it needs to be very wet sand and have water added as it dries out, so I don't see the advantage to it. You need to stir the coals every hour so I just add hot water at that time. I added a small loaf pan which added about a cup more water over the pan that came with the SN, did not go all the way to a full size loaf pan.
I believe you will love your Performer with the SN. I have the Gold which is the same as the Performer without the table. I smoke just about everything. If you have more questions please feel free to ask.

Jim I would maybe think twice about getting rid of your gas grill especially if you cook for a group at times. I often wish I had a second grill so I could put my vegetables on the second grill while I finish smoking my meats. I would get a couple of smoking boxes to set on the fire grate to provide a kiss of smoke to them. I love to do all sorts of veggies on the grill a hint of smoke adds such a nice addition to them.

I purchased a Smokenator 1000 off of eBay last night for $61.00 plus $9.00 shipping..that included a thermometer...I know that's not a "steal", but I saved a few bucks from the price of a new one....there were other people that wanted it as much as I did..lol I also bought a 1/4 size SS anti-jam pam from Amazon....so I just need to get my Weber Performer and I'll be set. Good deal Jim. For the Performer check the prices at Lowe's and Walmart. Walmart has them on their web site for ship to store so you save shipping costs. Lowe's may have them in the store, but can order them for you as can most ACE hardware stores. Don't expect to find a discounted price unless you can find a new one on e-bay. I would not buy a used Performer because if the lid is bent or out of round you will not get the tight seal that you need seal the SN needs.
