Hello, Just picked him up last night. A beautiful blue boy measuring 22". Found him on Craigslist. Paid $40.00. No cover but it does have a hinged grate. Need some help. It does not have a dome themometer. Should I cut one in? or use something like a Maverick or Themoworks product to measure dome and grate temp? I have been grilling for many years on my Chargriller offset cooker. The only slow and low I have done has been on my gas grill. I have not bought my Smokenator yet but will be real soon.

Welcome to the forum. I would not bother with a dome thermometer. Go with the Maverick ET-732 and drill a single hole just above grill height. A 3/8" hole will allow you to feed one probe at a time and I have not noticed any smoke escaping it from mine. Put it half way around from the handles. I bought mine from Amazon.
When you get the SN get the Hovergrill also you never know when you will be cooking for a crowd.

Is your Maverick reliable? I looked on Amazon and there you a few bad reviews on it. So with the wires going through the lid how do you remove the lid? Do you set it down or do you just hold on to it while you adjust your coals and such?

Yes the Maverick is accurate. A lot of the guys on here have one and have not heard of any complaints from them.
You drill the hole under the lid, in the base above the grill, not in the lid. My lid has a hook I can hang it by on the base when I am doing any work on the grill.

it's been a while since I used any of maverick's products, but , in the past, you could just email them and they would take care of any problem pronto.
maybe that's changed?
(I always 'test' any therms i use in boiling water - usually a coupla times a season. Any other issues with the Maverick's wireless technology are just the usual, interference, range etc.)

I had a bad heat probe when I first got mine, e-mailed them and had a new one right away.

The maverick is a very fine thermometer. The probes are the only weakness that I have found. No matter how gingerly you treat them, they do seem to fail from time-to-time. Amazon has them for a very reasonable price. They also have them in longer lengths.
