measure the area just below the lid, just across/outside of the location above the cook grate inside - say - when you have 225* at the grate level inside. Across from the SN. I THINK there is about 100* difference from inside to outside temps as measured with an IR therm. just curious if there may be a consistent difference that could be used to approximate grate temps without drilling any holes or snaking cables through the vent. unit like this should work;

1lt I am familiar with the infrared therms. I feel it would be very difficult to approximate grill temp from measuring dome temp with one. First the steel of the dome will act as a an insulator. Second weather will play a big influence on the dome. Sun will increase the temp, wind will lower it, a stray rain shower will lower it even if it is covered, etc.
I have both a dome therm and a Maverick, they are off by 50-90 degrees depending on what is happening with the weather. Go ahead and buy a Maverick if you haven't already, drill a 3/8" hole slightly above the grill 1/3 to 1/2 around from the handle. You will not get any smoke coming out of it. At least I don't.

yeah, color of dome might alter the emissivity of the surface too - 50-90 degrees is WAY to large a range to be helpful.
was hoping there would be a consistent difference - that would have been useful.

I have a Ryobi IR....I am seeing 40* difference on the outside of the lid, over the water pan, Vs. Outside of lid, over the SN holes. Also seeing 30* difference between Dome vs grate. My lid is leaky though

Forgot to mention , reproducing your test 230 grate v 176 where the IR was never higher than the weber handle
