I use a Maverick ET-7 thermometer. I generally keep one probe at the grate, and one in the meat. This means I have two thermometer wires coming out under the lid. Most of the time it's okay, but it does leak, and it makes temperature control harder than I want it to be. I guess the solution is to drill a small hole for the wires in the Kettle, and install a grommet. This should be fine for smoking, but I also use it as a grill, and I assume the grommet is going to melt under grilling temperatures.
So what do you guys do? I suppose a couple of those large clips would help. Where do you get them, Staples?

Steve, its kind of a pain, but you can run your probe wires down thru the top vents if your careful this works fine.

I use the Maverick to and I have not had any real problems maintaining temps due to leaks. If I were, I would likely run the wires through the vents as well.

I run mine (et-73) through top vents. No problem. If you need to lift the kettle top further away simply unplug the cable from the sender for a while. When you plug em right back the connection is still there.

has anyone tried eyelets?? i saw some advertized on the BBQ guru. Not me. Since I posted this, I gave up on the Maverick. It's built like a toy and has poor range. And now that I've gotten comfortable with the Smokenator, it just seems like too much hassle. I just use my dome thermo and a meat thermo.

My weber is a little leaky too, & I never got around to picking up binder clips so I've been using a "snake" of tin foil around the outside. It works pretty well, actually, & you don't have to take anything off when you take off the lid - the only time you need to take the foil off is if you need to add more coals. I wonder if you could "seal" around the wires with foil?
